Why Healthy Lives Matter in Our Faith Journey

In our walk with Christ, the condition of our bodies matters just as much as the condition of our hearts. At RiseUp Outreach Church, located at 12601 SW 72nd St, Miami, FL 33183, we believe that healthy lives matter, especially for those who preach God’s Word. Fasting is not just a spiritual discipline; it is a vital practice that benefits the body, sharpens self-control, and strengthens our witness as followers of Christ.

The Call to Healthy Living in Ministry

Pastor Hery Alonso often reminds us that we cannot preach about holiness while neglecting the health God has given us. He says, “We cannot rebuke others for their sins if we ourselves are enslaved to gluttony or poor habits. Fasting is a tool God uses to bring balance and discipline to our lives.” This teaching challenges us to examine how we live daily, especially in a culture that promotes excess and unhealthy choices.

Many Christians focus on avoiding obvious sins like lying, cussing, or drunkenness, yet overlook the subtle dangers of gluttony and poor eating habits. For example, it is inconsistent to criticize someone for having a glass of wine with dinner while ignoring the harm caused by consuming multiple sugary sodas loaded with 50 grams of sugar. Such habits can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, and even cancer. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NKJV), and caring for them honors God.

Fasting as a Discipline for Body and Spirit

Fasting is more than abstaining from food; it is a spiritual practice that cultivates self-control, one of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV). When we fast, we train our bodies and minds to resist temptation and focus on God’s presence. This discipline spills over into other areas of life, helping us make wiser choices about what we consume physically and spiritually.

At RiseUp Outreach Church, serving the Westchester and Sunset communities, we encourage fasting not only during special seasons but as a regular part of our faith journey. Fasting helps us:

  • Detoxify the body and improve overall health

  • Strengthen mental clarity and spiritual sensitivity

  • Develop discipline that combats the flesh’s desires

  • Align our priorities with God’s will

When we fast, we acknowledge that our strength comes from God, not from food or worldly comforts. This humility opens the door for God’s power to work in us.

Balancing Faith and Lifestyle Choices

Balance is key in our Christian walk. Pastor Hery Alonso teaches that lack of discipline due to poor eating choices cannot be mistaken for spiritual warfare. It is a matter of self-control and stewardship over the body God has entrusted to us. Junk food consumption and gluttony are works of the flesh that require mercy and prayer, not just condemnation.

We live in Miami, a vibrant city with many temptations and fast-food options. As a Miami Christian Church, RiseUp Outreach Church understands these challenges firsthand. We are committed to helping our congregation in Kendall and beyond develop healthy habits that honor God and promote longevity in ministry.

Here are practical ways to maintain balance:

  • Choose whole, natural foods over processed junk

  • Limit sugary drinks and excessive alcohol

  • Practice regular fasting to reset your body and spirit

  • Engage in physical activity as a form of stewardship

  • Pray for strength and guidance in making healthy choices

By adjusting our lifestyle, we not only improve our health but also set a powerful example for others in the community.

The Spiritual Impact of Healthy Living

Our physical health directly impacts our spiritual effectiveness. When we neglect our bodies, we risk burnout, illness, and a weakened testimony. Conversely, when we honor God with our health, we demonstrate respect for His creation and readiness to serve.

Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV) encourages us:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Fasting helps us enter this peace by removing distractions and focusing on God’s provision. It is a spiritual weapon that strengthens our faith and discipline.
